In Silence and in Roars (C)

Title:  In Silence and in Roars
Fandom: Psych
Author: Nnej
Disclaimer: I totally own them. All of them. You would not believe the asinine things I make them do.
Pairing: The Great S.S. Shassy
Rating: Dreadfully PG
Theme:  Gamma
Summary: Written for 1Sentence claim. Enjoy ^_^
A/N: Again, much love to my loml and beta,
sporkyadrasteia. <3

#01 – Ring– Seeing Lassiter dozing off at his desk, Shawn felt it was his moral duty to yell, “GOOD MORNING, LASSIE-FACE,” directly into his ear; a lovely B flat kept the detective company for the rest of the morning while Shawn was otherwise detained.

#49 – Lock– Lassiter wasn’t sure who gave Shawn a metal cup, but he can hear him clanging it against his cell’s bars all day; everyone was under orders to ignore him, but after four hours, even Lassiter’s vendetta had to concede.

#02 – Hero– Most people saw Lassiter as some sort of police hero, but Shawn knew better; he saw the subtle insecurities, the desperate wants, the cracks that grew wider with every case and every letter from the divorce lawyer.

#17 – Promise– Shawn had a hard time keeping any promise he made to anyone, so he just doesn’t bother anymore; nothing is guaranteed, nothing is set in stone, so saying “I promise…” is the same as saying “I know you’re going to be pissed at me later…”

#03 – Memory– When the truth about Shawn got out, Lassiter was unsure about how he felt; eidetic memory was surely enviable, but he wasn’t sure how anyone could function in this line of work without the ability to forget.

#04 – Box– Monday had Shawn asking Lassiter how he dealt with all the stress from work, Tuesday had Shawn laughing at Lassiter’s boxing outfit; Wednesday had the both of them beating the crap out of a punching bag, completely silent.

#34 – Formal– There was no declared cease-fire or formal treaty written up, rather the two of them simply coexisted with the understanding that they worked best when cooperating.

#23 – Fire– With O’Hara off chasing the perp’s accomplice, it was up to Shawn to cover Lassiter; later on, he would realize the overwhelming responsibility this was, but right now, he just took a breath and fired.

#20 – Talent– Until Shawn called it such, Lassiter never felt his singing was anything close to a “secret talent”; it was completely unproductive, after all, except to stop Shawn’s incessant blathering.

#05 – Run– Lassiter was just a few feet in front of him, trailing the suspect like a shadow and Shawn couldn’t help but be envious of how agile the detective was–completely focused on his objective, preferring death to failure.

#14 – Music– Whatever Lassiter said got faded at the corners with the bar music, making it seem as though he was singing as much as he was speaking; Shawn leaned back, drinking in the unexpected song.

#46 – Gravity– Something had changed– it hadn’t been intentional, but as the two men sat in compatible silence, passing a case file back and forth, it was painfully obvious that there was nothing they could do about it anymore.

#27 – Fall– It was Shawn who fell first (head over heels) into confusion; the sensation was odd and unfamiliar– to know how you feel, but then to not know why.

#09 – Red– Lassiter hadn’t realized he was staring at Shawn until the young man moved and a bright red after-image filled the space where Shawn’s green shirt had been.

#13 – View– Shawn watched Lassiter through the camera’s view, capturing a photo here and there until the detective spotted him; Gus found the picture later on, and wondered what his friend did to make Lassiter smile.

#18 – Dream– The first time Shawn visited Lassiter’s dreams, he had been shot a few times and Lassiter woke up feeling quite  satisfied; this latest visit, however, was a bit more intimate, and the satisfaction Lassiter awoke with was a great deal more embarrassing.

#37 – Lies– There was no reason to lie about how they felt, because neither of them asked– instead, it hung in the air like an odor, waiting for someone to get so disgusted, they had to figure out where it’s coming from.

#08 – Cold– That skiing resort homicide was what set things in motion since Shawn had forgotten his jacket and Lassiter was forced to share his with him; being that close, they refused to speak, but it was in vain since their racing hearts said it all.

#29 – Dance– Lassiter watched Shawn and O’Hara gyrate together on the dance floor and felt himself flush with jealousy; like any well-adjusted male, he dealt with this by attempting to drown himself in Jack Daniel’s.

#30 – Body– A 16 year old girl’s murder was what finally pushed Shawn and Lassiter to action; to see the victim’s best friend weep over the body, crying over his lost love and the tender words never spoken.

#42 – Talk–  “We need to talk,” Lassiter murmured breathlessly as lips ghost against his own; Shawn assured him that he had a better idea.

#06 – Hurricane– Their kiss swept everything out of the room—the case, the confusion, the pain; all that remained were the crescendo of heartbeats, deafening their ears.

#50 – Breathe– When Shawn asked “So, what now, Lassie?”, Lassiter has to remind himself to breathe; acutely, he is aware that this was a question with many wrong answers, and if he picks one, there might not be a second chance.

#39 – Overwhelmed– Shawn was a lot to deal with when they were just working together, so now that they’re in a relationship, Lassiter advises his friends to invest heavily in Wyeth.

#24 – Strength– Lassiter was sure this hadn’t been a fair match–the laws of arm wrestling clearly forbid the use of suggestive lip-licking to distract an opponent (or at least they should).

#12 – Temptation– Shawn has a habit of making rather obvious overtures at Lassiter during work, more out of sport than seduction; it was like a game– daring Lassiter to forget decency for a moment and just enjoy being bad.

#10 – Drink– No one suspected a thing until that night at the bar when, in an unprovoked and oddly intimate gesture, Lassiter exchanged the cherry in Shawn’s drink for the pineapple slice in his own.

#48 – Unknown– No one quite knew what to make of Shawn and Lassiter now; something was clearly different, but it was subtle enough to leave them guessing as to what, exactly, “It” was.

#07 – Wings– “No straight man goes to Hooters for the wings,” Gus states as though he were lobbing an accusation; Shawn looks at his friend levelly, daring him to ask what he knows is in his mind.

#16 – Cover– In the end, it was Lassiter who blew their cover when, assuming no one was looking, he thoughtlessly placed his hands on Shawn’s hips; “Never have an affair,” Shawn advised, shaking his head, “you just totally suck at restraining yourself.”

#22 – Journey– Lassiter asked where they were going and Shawn asked if it mattered; the detective stood still, understanding this was a test of trust, but still deciding if he could pass.

#47 – Highway– All at once, the streetlights merged into one solid, brilliant line next to the road and Lassiter had to hold onto Shawn’s shoulders tightly– every atom in him trembling with life like they never had before.

#32 – Farewells– Shawn insists on watching the war reenactments, which doesn’t bother Lassiter at all– but when Shawn breaks out the ‘Team North’ banners and pom-poms, it’s time for him to leave.

#11 – Midnight– When Shawn moved in, the biggest adjustment Lassiter had to make was getting used to was how restless Shawn was in bed–usually, they’d both be up until Lassiter finally had enough and wrapped his arms around the young man, just to keep him still.

#36 – Laugh– “I love you,” Lassiter said suddenly, leaning at the doorway as Shawn brushed his teeth; Shawn had to laugh since this was an absurd, terribly unromantic time to do this, but it was just so Lassiter.

#25 – Mask– It’s a constant hassle for Gus to mask his feelings when seeing Shawn and Lassiter together; all he wants is for his friend to be happy, but, deep down, he can’t help but feel confused and (unexplainably) believe that, if Shawn were to fall in love with any man, it should have been him.

#15 – Silk– “When did you get these boxers,” a mildly curious (and mostly amused) Shawn asked, holding them up for reference, “And, more importantly, why don’t you wear them more often?”

#26 – Ice– It was the little things that mattered most to the two of them, like Shawn restraining himself in front of Lassiter’s academy friends, or Lassiter tasting a little bit of Shawn’s cheerio-topped ice cream, even though it made him want to puke.

#19 – Candle– Church was boring, but Lassiter liked it, so Shawn suffered through; most often, he stayed in the room of prayer candles, lighting all of them (if time permitted), and asking, for each one, that God please not let his boyfriend down.

#28 – Forgotten– Anniversaries are aggravating times for Lassiter, since, while he occasionally gets over-stressed enough to neglect one, Shawn never misses anything.

#44 – Hope– Everyone had hoped this fight would blow over quickly, but Lassiter was being stubborn and so was Shawn, so instead of apologizing, they sat, pouted, and made things substantially worse.

#43 – Search– Silent treatments made two very miserable men, so they tried to find a way to mend things; Shawn sent Lassiter a dozen roses and Lassiter sent them back, insisting all he needed was for Shawn to come back home.

#35 – Fever– Lassiter looked at the thermometer and narrowed his eyes, “Well, either your brains melted three degrees ago, or you’re acting like a six year old and using the heater to fake-sick--either way, it’s no change from usual, so go get dressed.”

#33 – World– When they kiss, the world doesn’t stop, angels don’t sing, and time keeps on moving; it’s just a kiss, like all the others–nothing more, nothing less.

#21 – Silence– Sometimes words weren’t necessary, which was why they agreed after awhile that saying ‘I love you’ was trite; the words hung all around them, all the time, in silence, and in roars.

#40 – Whisper– No one was sure they had heard right, because it was just one of those things that bear repeating, so after a few stunned seconds, Lassiter said it again, softer and more nervous, “Marry me…?”

#45 – Eclipse– Henry was decidedly ambivalent about Shawn’s choice of a partner– on the one hand, he was a man, but on the other hand, he was a distinguished detective; in Henry’s eyes, finally having a detective in the family eclipsed all else.

#38 – Forever– As Shawn Spencer vows to love, honor, and obey Carlton Lassiter forever, Gus finds himself taking a few steps back, waiting for God to strike down his friend where he stood for such blatant blasphemy against his character.

#31 – Sacred– Their honeymoon wasn’t complete without a tour of the Dole Plantation; Shawn, of course, treated this as though it were a holy pilgrimage, and the tour guide had to giggle, “I guess this is how it feels to work in the Vatican.”

#41 – Wait– Legal paperwork and cases had kept them busy, so they had to wait for the whole “marriage” thing to hit–until then, they just enjoyed the afterglow and their numerous blenders.

You've done such a beautiful job with these! I know how hard it is to put them into some sort of order to form a coherent story, but you've managed it beautifully. I've got so many favorites it's hard to pick just a couple: #03, #05, #06, #10, #16, #18, #19, #20, #32, #35 are just so wonderful, ranging from incredibly funny to deeply moving, passing by oh-so-very-adorable.
Are you planning to share these with the folks over at shawn_lassiter? You should; I'm sure they'll love it as well :)

I x-posted it finally. For some reason, I had forgotten to do that when I posted it on 1sentence and psych_slash... Thanks for the reminder.
